| English abstract | It may be the case that all of the attempted models of integration are in crisis. We can, however, have a better sense of what the issues are if, firstly, we recognize that discourses on integration and multiculturalism are exercises in conceptualising post-immigration difference and, as such, operate at three distinct levels: as (implicit) sociology, as a political response, and as a vision of what is the whole in which difference is to be integrated. The term “difference” primarily refers to the way people are identified, how they identify themselves, how they identify others, and how others identify them. I suggest some possible scenarios after having identified “group difference” as the main concept for understanding the normative guidelines and their implicit sociology, assimilation, individualist-integration, cosmopolitanism, and multiculturalism. Each mode offers a different approach to freedom, equality, and civic unity. The enlargement, hyphenation, and internal pluralizing of national identities is essential to an integration in which all citizens have not just rights, but also a sense of belonging to the whole as well as to their own “little platoon” |
| Portuguese abstract | Pode ser que todas as tentativas de modelos de integração estejam em crise. Contudo, podemos ter uma ideia melhor das questões se, primeiro, reconhecermos que os discursos de integração e multiculturalismo são exercícios de conceitualização da diferença pós-imigração e que, por isso, funcionam em três níveis distintos: como sociologia (implícita), como resposta política e como visão do todo ao qual a diferença vai ser integrada. O termo “diferença” refere-se, primariamente, à forma como as pessoas são identificadas: como elas mesmas se identificam, como identificam os outros e como são identificadas pelos outros. Sugiro alguns possíveis cenários após haver identificado a “diferença de grupo” como principal conceito para entender as orientações normativas e suas sociologias implícitas, de assimilação, integração individual, cosmopolitismo e multiculturalismo. Cada modo oferece uma abordagem diferente sobre liberdade, igualdade e unidade cívica. O alargamento, a hifenização e a pluralização interna das identidades nacionais são essenciais para haver uma integração na qual todos os cidadãos não somente têm direitos, mas, também, um sentimento de pertencimento ao todo, tal qual ao seu próprio “pequeno pelotão” |
