Spanish abstract Esta reseña recapitula diversas circunstancias relativas al descubrimiento en 1958-1959 de la trisomía 21 propia del síndrome de Down y a la participación de los tres autores protagonistas. En particular, se subraya que fue Marthe Gautier quien en realidad hizo los cultivos celulares, analizó las metafases y se percató que los pacientes con síndrome de Down tenían 47 cromosomas. En consecuencia, es claro que su crucial contribución no había recibido, hasta la actualidad, el crédito apropiado
English abstract This brief account summarizes controversial views on the contribution of each of the three French authors’ discovery of trisomy 21 in patients with Down syndrome in 1958-1959. It is highlighted that Dr. Marthe Gautier set up the cell cultures, analyzed the metaphases, and realized for the first time that these patients had 47 chromosomes. Notwithstanding, her crucial participation had not got the corresponding credit until recently
