| Spanish abstract | El texto expone cómo, en el siglo XIX, la prensa conservadora y católica de Chile juzgó la obra política del presidente mexicano Benito Juárez. El 25 de agosto de 1872, a raíz del conocimiento en Chile de la muerte de Juárez, el diario El Independiente, de tendencias afines al partido conservador, dedicó su columna editorial a discutir el derrotero de México bajo la conducción del prohombre de La Reforma. La semblanza fue inclemente, se le negó a Juárez la talla de héroe o defensor de la patria; se le concibió carente de virtudes republicanas y preso de una incansable ambición política. Pero sobre todo se le acusó de dilapidar la oportunidad de consolidar a México y sus instituciones luego de la derrota, en 1867, del Imperio del archiduque Maximiliano de Austria. En suma, Juárez fue presentado como adalid de “las violencias revolucionarias”, que “asolaban” a “la América Española” y a Europa |
| English abstract | This text discusses how in the nineteenth century the conservative Catholic press in Chile judged the politics of the mexican president Benito Juárez. On August 25, 1872, with the news in Chile of the death of Juárez the daily El Independiente, with tendencies toward the conservative party, dedicated its editorial column to a discussion of the defeat of Mexico and the conduct of the great man in the Reform. The portrait was harsh, negating Juárez hero status or that of patriotic defender in the conception of his lack of republican virtues and tireless public ambition. But more than anything, they accused Juárez of squandering the opportunity of consolidating Mexico and its institutions after the defeat in 1867 of the Empire of the Archduke Maximiliano of Austria.
