| English abstract | This article is an effort to contextualize the body and the kinds of bodies in the short story “The Chance”, written by Peter Carey in 1979. Supported by theories which comprehend the body in different ways, as Zygmunt Bauman’s “dream of purity”, Katherine Hayles’s notion of mutation and her observations about the electronic text, and also Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – which is also concerned with the body –, among others, I intend to map the bodies moving in the story and measure the possibilities of a Chance, being it in terms of technological procedure or personal choice to change the body for another one |
| Portuguese abstract | O presente artigo é escrito na tentativa de contextualizar o corpo e os tipos de corpos no conto “The Chance”, escrito por Peter Carey em 1979. Com suporte em teorias que abrangem o corpo de diferentes formas, como o “sonho de pureza” de Zygmunt Bauman, a noção de mutação de Katherine Hayles e suas observações sobre o texto eletrônico, bem como a história do Doutor Frankenstein de Mary Shelley – que também se preocupa com o corpo –, entre outros, pretendo mapear os corpos movendo-se na história e medir as possibilidades de uma Chance, seja em termos de procedimento tecnológico ou escolha pessoal para trocar o corpo por outro |
