| English abstract | The subject of this article is the concepts of risk and vulnerability. It asserts that they can only be understood when associated with different social and historical contexts and with the different scientific areas that have developed them to deal with their objects. Secondly, it supports the idea that they are distinct concepts, but intrinsically related, because, while risk is related with distressed conditions of contemporary technological society, vulnerability identifies the condition of individuals in that society. Finally it shows that the post-industrial society is a society at risk, mainly by the effects that technology and economic globalization have produced |
| Portuguese abstract | Constata-se uma discussão em torno da gênese do conceito de risco e vulnerabilidade social e seus usos. Por isso, abordam-se, em primeiro lugar, as definições de risco e vulnerabilidade que só podem ser entendidos como um processo associado a diferentes contextos histórico-sociais e a diferentes áreas científicas que os desenvolveram para tratar dos seus objetos. Em segundo lugar, é defendida a ideia de que, por um lado, tem havido uma confusão no uso dos conceitos de risco e vulnerabilidade e, por outro, alguns autores concentram-se mais no conceito de risco, enquanto outros, no de vulnerabilidade |
