| Spanish abstract | La historia chilena muestra diversas crisis políticas, económicas y sociales que han derivado en situaciones violentas. Así ocurrió en 1891 durante el régimen de José Manuel Balmaceda. La institucionalidad del país fue quebrantada por el Congreso que, con el respaldo de la Marina, formó un gobierno paralelo en Iquique, iniciando una revolución que costó la vida a diez mil chilenos. En el período previo y durante la crisis, la Prensa se convirtió en una efectiva trinchera de lucha política, con una virulencia poco observada hasta entonces. Antofagasta no fue ajena a esta realidad y tuvo como protagonistas a “El Industrial” y “El Internacional”, diarios que, al mismo tiempo, nunca dejaron de informar acerca de la realidad que vivía la actual capital regional, de su progreso y carencias |
| English abstract | The Chilean history has gone through several social, economic, and political crises, which have derived into violent situations. Manuel Balmaceda’s regime in 1891 was no exception. The country’s institutional order was broken by Congress, which constituted a parallel government in Iquique with the support of the Navy. The cost of this was the life of ten thousand Chilean citizens. During this period, and the period before, the Press became an effective, but at the same time tough, political trench. In Antofagasta, the “El Industrial” and the “El Internacional” newspapers were responsible of keeping people informed about the on-going revolution, as well as the difficulties and progress of the city |
