| English abstract | The aim of this text is to analyze the city guides written and published by Gilberto Freyre in the 1930's: the "Practical, historical and sentimental guide of Recife" (1934) and "Olinda - the second practical, historical and sentimental guide of a Brazilian city" (1934). The careful reading of these little-studied works allows one to discuss a number of issues, since Freyre talks about the cities, as well as about himself and about other contemporary topics. It is under these circumstances - the place of the reader becomes indiscernible from that of the tourist that I follow his urban tracks, conscious of the images projected on the city, and most of all, of the clues on his own condition as interpreter of the Brazilian urban scenery and social life. The itinerary Freyre chooses functions beautifully as a compass to place one in the position of analyst of modernization and modernity, taking regional surroundings as a starting point. | Portuguese abstract | Este texto propõe uma interpretação dos guias de cidades escritos e publicados por Gilberto Freyre nos anos de 1930: o Guia prático, histórico e sentimental da cidade do Recife (1934) e Olinda - segundo guia prático, histórico e sentimental de cidade brasileira (1939). A leitura detida dessas obras, pouco analisadas, permite discutir uma série de questões, já que Freyre fala da(s) cidade(s), de si mesmo e de uma cena de época. É sob essa orientação - a condição de leitora se confunde com a de turista - que procuro seguir seus traçados urbanos, atenta às imagens projetadas sobre a cidade e sobretudo às pistas lançadas sobre sua própria condição de intérprete da cena urbana e da vida social brasileira. O itinerário desenhado por Freyre funciona também como bússola para localizar sua posição como analista da modernização e da modernidade, a partir da consideração da cena regional. Os textos apresentam, numa espécie de drágea concentrada, temas e problemas que mobilizaram o autor durante toda a vida |
