| Portuguese abstract | Este estudo é uma análise de dois romances de Machado deAssis: Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas e Dom Casmurro a partir de duas perspectivas: 1) Uma relação amorosa raramente está terminada quando termina porque a memória, a necessidade de entender o que aconteceu, ou simplesmente a dor ou a frustração, persistem. Assiste-se então a uma tentativa de reconstrução do que sucedeu, surgindo a memória de outros acontecimentos ou a reavaliacão dos detalhes da relação. Novos sentidos, dúvidas, interpretações diferentes desempenham ainda um papel importante na existência daquele ou daquela que recorda e tenta compreender. 2) Os dois romances de Machado contam-se entre os melhores exemplos das mudanças que tiveram lugar no século XIX nas relações entre os homens e as mulheres e na maneira de entender e viver o casamento, instituição respeitável e que Machado respeitava mas nos obriga a reavaliar |
