| Spanish abstract | En este artículo pretendo desentramar las políticas lingüísticas del Estado venezolano hacia las lenguas indígenas. Luego de definir planificación lingüística y política lingüística, procedo a describir lo que se ha hecho en el marco de la planificación formal, funcional y de la adquisición de estas lenguas. Basándome en este análisis, resumo las principales características de las políticas lingüísticas del Estado venezolano. Concluyo que sólo los mismos pueblos indígenas tienen la potestad de decidir si abandonar o conservar su lengua, y que la política lingüística debe coincidir con las aspiraciones de estos sectores sociales si pretende ser exitosa |
| English abstract | This paper seeks to disentangle the linguistic policy of the Venezuelan state towards indigenous languages. We start by defining linguistic planning and linguistic policy, then proceed to describe what has been done in the framework of formal, functional and acquisition planning of these languages. Based on this analysis, the principal characteristics of the linguistic policy of the Venezuelan state are resumed. I concluded that only the indigenous peoples themselves have the right to decide if to abandon or preserve their language, and that linguistic policy must coincide with the aspirations of these social sectors if pretending to be successful |
