| Spanish abstract | El artículo explora el momento primigenio de formación de la leyenda creada alrededor de la vida de William Lamport, irlandés quemado por la Inquisición de México en 1659. Para estudiar el origen de la leyenda se analiza el proceso inquisitorial a otro contemporáneo, el religioso franciscano Diego Nugencio, juzgado por haber pronunciado palabras en favor de su compatriota. El estudio rescata un expediente inédito del Archivo Histórico Nacional de Madrid. Para el análisis, me sirvo de reflexiones metodológicas de la historia cultural y en especial recupero aquellos elementos que contribuyen a entender la cultura política del periodo moderno. De la misma manera, articulo una serie de importantes noticias que circulaban en el mundo atlántico: los problemas de sucesión dinástica, las tensiones de España con Portugal e Inglaterra y la circulación de libros prohibidos; elementos que dejan abierta la posibilidad de un vínculo entre Diego Nugencio y William Lamport |
| English abstract | This article explores the origins of the formation of the legend created around the life of William Lamport, an Irishman burnt at the stake by the Mexican Inquisition in 1659. In order to study the origin of the legend, an analysis will be provided of the Inquisition trial of another contemporary, and tried for having made declarations in favour of his compatriot. The study is based on an unpublished file of the National Historical Archive of Madrid. For the analysis, the author uses methodological reflections pertaining to cultural history, and particularly focuses on those elements that contribute to understanding the political culture of the modern period, which are present in the reconstruction of the Inquisition. The article therefore examines a series of important news items that circulated in the Atlantic world: the problems of dynastic succession, tensions of Spain with Portugal and England, and the circulation of forbidden books. Indications throughout the text open the possibility of a connection between Diego Nugent and William Lamport |
