English abstract | Diplomatic relations between Mexico and Guatemala were less than optimal during the nineteen-thirties, defined by an environment full of suspicions and handshakes between their representatives. In this paper I study the accusation against Guatemalan President Jorge Ubico (1931-1944) of participating in the uprising of Saturnino Cedillo, which occurred in May 1938. Through archival research in both countries, I clarify interference that certain researchers have accepted without showing significant proof, and others have ignored. Did Ubico support the cedillistas that rebelled against the government of Lázaro Cárdenas? I respond to this question by examining the source of the accusation, its promotors in Mexico, and the response by the Cardenist government. These means allow me to broach an awkward and little analyzed episode of this bilateral relationship |
