| Spanish abstract | El objeto de este trabajo es intentar precisar la naturaleza de la influencia del Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) en el sector educativo, tomando como eje de discusión la reforma educativa tanto desde el Congreso de la Unión como al interior de la Secretaría de Educación Pública. El análisis de las comisiones de Educación expone una participación significativa del SNTE como gatekeeper de las iniciativas que eventualmente afectan la legislación en materia educativa, mientras que en la SEP también se aprecia una participación y poder de veto importante del SNTE en la reforma gracias a su participación en los mandos medios y altos de la SEP, control sobre la estructura magisterial y participación en las comisiones mixtas. Estos hallazgos amplían nuestro conocimiento sobre la influencia del SNTE en el sector educativo mexicano y sus potenciales implicaciones sobre la calidad educativa |
| English abstract | The purpose of this article is to attempt to define the nature of the influence of the National Union of Workers in Education (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación–SNTE) in the educational sector, basing the discussion on educational reform from Mexico’s Congress as well as the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP). An analysis of the educational commissions reveals the significant participation of the SNTE as the gatekeeper of initiatives that eventually affect educational legislation; the importance of SNTE’S veto power in educational reform is seen to be due to its participation in the middle and upper management of the SEP, its control of the structure of the teaching profession, and its participation on mixed commissions. These findings broaden our knowledge of the influence of the SNTE in Mexico’s educational sector and its potential implications on the quality of education |
