| Spanish abstract | El México decimonónico se caracterizó por repetidos y violentos conflictos y por profundos cambios culturales. La "nación" y el "ciudadano" fueron los conceptos que tomaron cuerpo en ese periodo, y la educación –especialmente la cívica– se consideró uno de los medios más importantes para su materialización y difusión. Según políticos e intelectuales de la época esa educación transformaría al pueblo mexicano en ciudadanos y a la República en un país moderno. Este artículo presenta el discurso de la élite oaxaqueña que, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, plantea la necesidad de una educación –cívica– para la “masa”, los antecedentes históricos del instrumento pedagógico que se utilizó para esa educación, es decir, el catecismo político y, finalmente, el análisis de tres catecismos oaxaqueños publicados entre 1857 y 1890 |
| English abstract | The nineteenth century in Mexico was characterized by repeated, violent conflicts and profound cultural change. “Nation” and “citizen” were the concepts that took shape during that period, and education –especially civic education– was considered one of the most important means for their materialization and transmission. According to the politicians and intellectuals of the era, education would transform the Mexican people into citizens, and the republic of Mexico into a modern country. This article presents the discourse of elite groups in Oaxaca who during the second half of the nineteenth century, suggested the need for education –civic education– for the masses; it also makes note of the historical precedents of the pedagogical instrument used for that education –political catechism– and analyzes the three Oaxacan catechisms published between 1857 and 1890 |
