| Spanish abstract | La encefalopatía hepática es un síndrome neuropsiquiátrico que ocurre en pacientes con insufi ciencia hepática aguda y crónica. Tiene una incidencia muy alta entre los pacientes cirróticos, el aumento de las toxinas circulantes llega al cerebro y causa múltiples alteraciones estructurales y funcionales. Las manifestaciones clínicas y la fi siopatología han sido estudiadas en detalle. El papel de los astrocitos en la aparición de este síndrome clínico es ahora claro y se han definido múltiples alteraciones en el metabolismo del cerebro que dan cuenta del insulto celular causado por la insuficiencia hepática. Este artículo ofrece un resumen del papel de los astrocitos en la conservación de la homeostasis del cerebro y cómo su estructura y funcionamiento se alteran en la encefalopatía hepática, proporcionando una explicación fisiológica a las manifestaciones clínicas de esta enfermedad |
| English abstract | Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that occurs in patients with acute and chronic liver failure. It has a very high incidence among cirrhotic patients, increase of circulating toxins reach the brain and cause multiple structural and functional abnormalities. The clinical manifestations and pathophysiology have been studied in detail. The role of the astrocyte in the onset of this clinical syndrome has been established, and it is now clear that there are multiple derangements in brain metabolism that account for cellular insult caused by liver failure. This paper offers a summary of the role of the astrocyte in preserving brain homeostasis, and how its structure and function are altered in hepatic encephalopathy, it provides a physiologic explanation to the clinical manifestations of this disease |
