Resumen en inglés | Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that occurs in patients with acute and chronic liver failure. It has a very high incidence among cirrhotic patients, increase of circulating toxins reach the brain and cause multiple structural and functional abnormalities. The clinical manifestations and pathophysiology have been studied in detail. The role of the astrocyte in the onset of this clinical syndrome has been established, and it is now clear that there are multiple derangements in brain metabolism that account for cellular insult caused by liver failure. This paper offers a summary of the role of the astrocyte in preserving brain homeostasis, and how its structure and function are altered in hepatic encephalopathy, it provides a physiologic explanation to the clinical manifestations of this disease |
