Resumen en inglés | This essay relates to a study of electronic job advertisements for translators in Mexico. The analysis found that less than 10 % of advertisers require applicants to have a degree in translation. As a subsequent reflection, the paper summarily reviews six assumptions, some of them derived from polemical debates in the discipline, which could explain this undervaluing of university studies. The review is supported by further data from the same advertisement-study, as well as by the work of some researchers in translation studies and education. In conclusion, several of the assumptions can be discarded easily, others turn out to prove true. It is noticed that most employers are unaware of the set of competencies required for translation activities according to the EMT Competence Framework (2022), which serves as our frame of reference. |
Resumen en español | El presente ensayo surge a raíz de un estudio de anuncios electrónicos de empleo para traductores en México el cual arrojó que menos del 10 % de los anunciantes exige que los solicitantes tengan una licenciatura en traducción. Como reflexión subsiguiente se revisan sumariamente seis suposiciones, en parte derivadas de debates polémicas de la disciplina, que pudieran explicar este menosprecio de estudios universitarios. La revisión se apoya en otros datos que arrojó el mismo análisis de anuncios, así como en trabajos de investigadores en traductología y educación. En conclusión, algunas de las suposiciones pueden descartarse con relativa facilidad, otras se confirman. Se constata el desconocimiento de gran parte de los empleadores del entramado de competencias que requiere la labor traductora según el EMT Competence Framework (2022) el cual nos sirve como marco referencial. |
