| English abstract | The former president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, was and still is a controversial figure. His portraits may vary from the defender of socialism and South America sovereignty against Yankee imperialism to the dictator that suppressed the press and the political opposition in his term of office. The treatment given is inherently associated with the ideological position of the speaker –from a social-democrat to a liberal perspective. With that in mind, the purpose of this work is to analyze to which level the ideological positions of British newspapers had influence in the treatment given to his passing, in March 2013, through techniques and the theoretical background of Discourse Analysis. We could infer that The Guardian valued the achievements of the regime and associated its failures with the personality of Chávez, while The Daily Telegraph would see few merits on the government structure as a whole and defend the return of Venezuela to a liberal democratic model |
| Portuguese abstract | O ex-presidente da Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, foi e ainda é uma figura controversa. Seus retratos podem variar desde o defensor do socialismo e da soberania sulamericana contra o imperialismo ianque até o ditador que reprimiu a imprensa e a oposição política durante seu período de governo. E o tratamento dado é inerente a posição ideológica do falanteseja uma perspectiva social-democrata ou liberal. Com isso em mente, o propósito deste trabalho é analisar em que medida as posições ideológicas de jornais britânicos influenciaram no tratamento dado ao seu falecimento, em março de 2013, através de técnicas e do embasamento teórico da Análise de Discurso. Pudemos constatar que o Guardian valorizou as conquistas do regime e atribuiu suas falhas à personalidade de Chávez, enquanto o Daily Telegraph via poucos méritos na forma de governo como um todo e defendia o retorno da Venezuela ao modelo liberal democrático, confirmando assim nossas hipóteses de trabalho |
