Resumen en inglés | The calorigenic effect of the natural food Acanthopleura granullata (a chiton) was evaluated on the breathing and excretion of Panulirus argus. Eight juvenile lobsters with wet biomass between 40 and 101 g were used. Portions of the chiton were provided as food in a dynamic respirometer in which chambers worked as metabolic cages, allowing the measurement of oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion, and furthermore, the estimation of the bioenergetic index, apparent heat increase, post-pandrial nitrogen excretion and the metabolic substrate or O:N ratio. After six-hour experiments the oxygen consumption reached 2.62 times the value during fast (956.9 joules kg bh-1.h-1), generating an apparent heat increase of 1714.5 J. kg bh-1.h-1, while the nitrogen excretion reached 3.14 times the fast level (227.9 J.kg bh-1.h-1), representing a post-pandrial nitrogen excretion of 595.9 joules kg bh-1.h-1. The O:N ratio did not show significant statistical variations, remained between 9-14, indicating pure protein catabolism. Comparison of these values with other crustaceans are discussed. It is concluded that proteins of A. granullata are used in catabolism, but due to its high protein content (72.3%), this food is physiologically appropriate for juveniles of the species |
