| English abstract | This essay is an attempt to understand the anthropological presuppositions of interpretation of Hawaiian thought in the 18th century considering the reciprocal elucidation of Marshall Sahlins’s and Gananath Obeyesekere’s arguments about this way of thinking. It is not possible to reproduce the authors’ arguments in all their ethnographical profusion and theoretical sophistication therefore it was our option to emphasize the identification of Captain Cook as the Hawaiian god Lono in order to make explicit Sahlins’s and Obeyesekere’s concerns regarding the validity of such a practice as a rational behavior |
| Portuguese abstract | Empreende-se neste ensaio um esforço de conhecer os pressupostos antropológicos de interpretação do pensamento havaiano do século XVIII a partir da elucidação recíproca dos argumentos de Marshall Sahlins e Gananath Obeyesekere sobre esta maneira de pensar. Não sendo possível reproduzir os argumentos dos autores em toda sua profusão etnográfica e sofisticação teórica, optou-se por destacar a questão da identificação pelos havaianos do capitão Cook como seu deus Lono de modo a explicitar as preocupações de Sahlins e Obeyesekere quanto à validade de tal prática como um comportamento racional |
