| Spanish abstract | El presente trabajo presenta una interpretación de la constitución como un meca - nismo adaptativo. Si bien Bowles (2004) distingue dos tradiciones —la constitucional y la adaptativa— para la organización de vida en sociedad, aquella distinción no debe ser taxativa y categórica. En efecto, existen presiones que retroalimentan dinámicas endóge - nas entre la arena constitucional y el ámbito político (a través de la lucha adaptativa por el poder). En ese sentido, se presenta un modelo teórico y computacional que define a la constitución evolutiva como un espacio de interacción entre los factores reales de poder y los mecanismos de decisión. Al mediar los procesos de variación y selección, el espa - cio constitucional evolutivo es la órbita de adaptación que permite la reproducción del sistema político. No obstante, el presente modelo distingue aquellas fuerzas que buscan aplanar estos espacios constitucionales y con ello, imponer una camisa de fuerza para limitar su flexibilidad, de aquellos diseños liberales que incluyen fricciones en el sistema para garantizar su heterogeneidad en medio de fuertes presiones sociales disipativas |
| English abstract | The article offers an interpretation of the constitution as an adaptive mechanism. While Bowles (2004) distinguishes between the constitutional and the adaptive traditions for the organization of social life, that distinction cannot be prescriptive and categorical. In fact, there are pressures that create endogenous dynamics between the constitutional arena and the political setting (through the adaptive struggle for power). In this sense, the article presents a theoretical and computational model that defines the evolutionary cons - titution as a space of interaction between the actual factors of power and decision-making mechanisms. By mediating the processes of variation and selection, the evolutionary constitutional space becomes the setting for the adaptation that allows for the reproduc - tion of the political system. Nevertheless, this model distinguishes between those forces that seek to restrict these constitutional spaces and consequently impose a straitjacket that limits their flexibility and the liberal designs that include frictions in the system in order to guarantee their heterogeneity amidst strong dissipative social pressures |
