| English abstract | The present study has as its theme the change in the perception of non-human beings within science (understood here as a social process), from the first experiments with animals, through the Cartesian doctrine that characterized scientific thought from the 17th century to the present day. For this, it seeks to contextualize animal experimentation, presenting a brief history and the first criticisms; discuss the strengthening of the moral issue around animals, especially from the beginning of the 1980s; and present some of the most important moral theories involving animal rights, in addition to the contribution of researchers linked to the field of neuroscience to the theme. |
| Portuguese abstract | O presente estudo tem como tema a mudança na percepção sobre os seres não humanos dentro da ciência (entendida aqui como um processo social), desde os primeiros experimentos com animais, passando pela doutrina cartesiana que caracterizou o pensamento científico do século XVII, até a atualidade. Para isso, procura contextualizar a experimentação animal, apresentando um breve histórico e as primeiras críticas; discutir sobre o fortalecimento da questão moral em torno dos animais, sobretudo a partir do começo da década de 1980; e apresentar algumas das mais importantes teorias morais que envolvem direitos dos animais, além da contribuição de pesquisadores ligados ao campo da neurociência para o tema. |
