| English abstract | Traditionally, when it comes to non-Euclidean geometries, most historians report that Felix Klein was inspired by reading Arthur Cayley"s A Sixth Memoir upon Quantics (1859). However, they do not fully present Cayley"s contributions, only saying that Klein applied Cayley"s work to the case of non-Euclidean geometries. However, there are some problems in this narrative, the biggest of which is that Cayley has his own approach that is slightly different from that presented by Klein. Our article proposes to analyze these differences, clarifying the relation between the works of these mathematicians and the genesis of non – Euclidean metrics. |
| Portuguese abstract | Tradicionalmente, quando se trata das geometrias não euclidianas, a maioria dos historiadores relata que Felix Klein se inspirou ao ler a "Sexta Memória sobre os Quantics" (1859) de Arthur Cayley. Todavia, não apresentam de forma completa as contribuições de Cayley, dizendo apenas que Klein é que interpretou o trabalho de Cayley para o caso das geometrias não euclidianas. Porém, têm-se alguns problemas nesta narrativa, o maior deles é que Cayley possui uma abordagem própria que é ligeiramente distinta da apresentada por Klein. Nosso artigo se propõe a analisar estas diferenças, esclarecendo a relação entre os trabalhos destes matemáticos e a gênese das métricas não euclidianas. |
