| Spanish abstract | El objetivo de esta investigación fue conocer las características del sitio donde se disponen los residuos sólidos urbanos y de manejo especial de la ciudad de San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, además de las condiciones de operación teniendo como referencia los lineamientos de la Norma NOM-083-SEMARNAT-2003. Para ello se realizaron visitas de campo y entrevistas con personal de las áreas: Departamento de limpia, operación del sitio y segregación de subproductos. Para estimar los volúmenes de residuos dispuestos, se realizaron 5 sondeos eléctricos verticales. Asimismo, se realizó una revisión de los aspectos climatológicos de la zona y levantamientos de flora y fauna. Los resultados mostraron una generación per-cápita de 1.215 Kg con 190 ton/día depositadas; un espesor promedio de residuos de 15metros, con un volumen de 1,050,000 m3, un peso volumétrico aproximado de 655 kg/m3, lo que arroja 687,434 ton dispuestas; se generan lixiviados y biogás sin control alguno; en lo relacionado a la fauna destacan las jaurías de perros; con respecto a la flora, en los alrededores se observó Pinus sp, Quercus sp; pocos arbustos de acuerdo con la normatividad correspondiente y ninguna de las especies se encuentra en peligro de extinción. Se recomienda tomar las medidas necesarias para evitar más daños al ambiente y clausurar el sitio |
| English abstract | This research project set out to discover the characteristics of the site currently being used for dumping rubbish produced in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas; the conditions under which the dump operates; and how closely said conditions comply with the stipulations laid down in Official Mexican Standard. To estimate the volumes of rubbish at the Municipal Dump, 5 vertical electrical probes were sunk into the underlying matter to assess its depth. Results show that the per capita generation of solid waste is 1.215 Kg; that according to official regulations the dump is classed as Category A; that the rubbish is covered over every 3 months; that the average depth of the residues is in the order of 15 metres, thus being approximately equivalent to 1,050,000 m3 volume and 655 kg/m3 volumetric weight. This means an overall total of 687,434 tons of rubbish has been dumped at the site, and there was found to be no control whatsoever over the leachates and biogas this waste matter generates. The fauna consists mainly of colonies of stray dogs, rats and flies; the local flora is mainly Pinus sp., Quercus sp. and Crataegus sp., with very few bushes, and none of the species is in danger of extinction. This study still recommends the taking of measures necessary to prevent further damage to the local environment, and the permanent closing of the dump |
