| Portuguese abstract | A palavra variola ou varíola, etimologicamente possui origem do latim vulgar "varius", sendo formada por meio do radical "vari", que se encontra presente em inúmeros verbetes, como por exemplo, "vários", "variedade" e "varicela", sendo esta última o diminutivo de varíola e, possuindo enquanto significação, "marcado", ou por extensão, com "manchas". Segundo alguns antigos relatos, se considera que ela teria surgido inicialmente na Índia ou no Egito, sendo também descrita posteriormente junto ao continente asiático e ainda, no africano desde antes do Anno Domini (A.D.), ou seja, do que é considerada a era cristã |
| English abstract | The word variola or smallpox, etymologically originates from the Vulgar Latin "varius", being formed through the root "vari", which is present in numerous entries, such as "various", "variety" and "varicella", the latter being the diminutive of smallpox and, having as a meaning, "marked", or by extension, with "spots". According to some ancient reports, it is considered that it would have appeared initially in India or Egypt, being also described later with the Asian continent and still, in Africa since before the Anno Domini (A.D.), that is, of what is considered the Christian era. |
