| Spanish abstract | El estrés puede influir tanto en el estado afectivo como en la modulación neuroendócrina y con el tiempo, en la respuesta inmune. De tal forma, una situación estresante, como tener un hijo con una enfermedad médica seria, puede ejercer un efecto deletéreo en el sistema inmune. Objetivo: se buscó correlacionar la sintomatología ansiosa y depresiva con las cuentas de subpoblaciones de linfocitos en madres con hijos leucémicos, en comparación con madres con hijos sanos. Material y métodos: se compararon 22 madres de niños leucémicos con 22 madres de niños sanos. A todas las mujeres se les aplicó una entrevista semiestructurada de datos demográficos e indicadores indirectos de enfermedad; todas contestaron además, el Inventario de Depresión de Beck y las Escalas de Ansiedad de Sheehan. A todas las mujeres se les tomaron muestras de sangre para cuantificar subpoblaciones de linfocitos (CD3+, CD4+ y CD8+). Estas se realizaron mediante citometría de flujo. El análisis estadístico se efectuó mediante las pruebas de 2, Fisher y Mann-Whitney. Resultados: las madres de los niños leucémicos puntuaron significativamente más alto para ansiedad (p=0.0001) y depresión (p=0.0003), aunque no hubo diferencias estadísticas en las cuentas de subpoblaciones de linfocitos. Conclusiones: Aun cuando el estrés influye en el estado afectivo, no se puede asegurar que afecta las subpoblaciones de linfocitos debido a un proceso de adaptación |
| English abstract | Stress may have an influence in the affective status, the neuroendocrinre modulation and, ultimately, in the immune response. Therefore, a stressful situation, such as having a child with a serious medical condition, may have a deleterious effect on the immune system. Objective: to detect anxious and depressive symptomatology and establishn possible associations with immune cell count abnormalities among mothers of children with leukemic children in comparison with mothers with healthy children. Material and methods: 22 mothers of leukemic children were compared with 22 mothers of healthy children. All women completed a semistructured interview for demographic measures and indirect disease indicators, and answered the Beck Depression Inventory and the Sheehan Anxiety Scales. All women had blood drawn for immune cell counts (CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+), which were performed with of flow cytometry. Statistical analyses were carried out with the 2, Fisher and Mann-Whitney tests. Main outcome results: mothers with leukemic children scored significatively higher for anxiety (p=0.0001) and depression (p=0.0003), there were no significative differences in immune cell counts. Conclusions: although stress has an influence on the affective status, it may not affect immune cell counts due to an adaptation process |
