| English abstract | It is to Professor Ades credit that he took the pains to address the question of consciousness: the less it is discussed the more naive will be our notions about it. Ades shows that there must be objective criteria to attribute properties to animals. Otherwise, the animal of Science will not be different from mythological hybrids. This note suggests, however, that as the reader follows the Authors skilful efforts to undo some of the knots of the problem, he may find himself entangled amidst new viscous threads, particulary the idea that there is a kind of consciousness which is unique to man |
| Portuguese abstract | Credite-se ao Professor Ades por sua decisão de abordar a questão da consciência: quanto menos se discutir esse assunto mais ingênuas serão nossas idéias sobre ele. Ades mostra que atribuição de propriedades ao animal tem de obedecer a critérios verificáveis. Sem isso, o animal da Ciência não será diferente dos híbridos dos mitos. Contudo, esta nota sugere que, ao acompanhar o Autor em seus hábeis esforços para desatar alguns dos nós do problema, o leitor talvez se sinta envolvido por novos fios viscosos, em especial pela noção de que haveria um espécie de consciência exclusivamente humana |
