| English abstract | This paper presents aspects of the organization of the school in cycles and its relation with the retention practices based on the Theory of Social Representation (TRS) as well as studies on the schooling in cycles in Brazil. The research involved the analysis of interviews with 11 teachers of the state school system. The data analysis in-volved: content analysis, lexical analysis of content (software ALCESTE), and spontaneous classification of words. The findings pointed out that the repetition as central element of the teaching-learning relationships. Thus, the social representations of the teacher indicate that cultural factors overlap structural factors and it is essential as-pects to understand the implementation of the schooling in cycles policy |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo aborda aspectos da organização da escola em ciclos e sua relação com a reprovação escolar, com base na teoria das Representações Sociais e em estudos referentes aos ciclos. Foram realizadas entrevistas semi-estruturadas com 11 docentes de uma escola pública. A análise dos dados se apoiou na análise de conteúdo te-mática, análise lexical de conteúdo (software ALCESTE) e classificação espontânea de palavras. Os resultados apontam a reprovação como elemento central das relações de ensino-aprendizagem. Assim, as representações sociais dos professores mostram que fatores culturais se sobrepõem a fatores estruturais, sendo fundamental compreendê-las para o sucesso da escola organizada em ciclos |
