| Spanish abstract | En 1906 se realizó en Argentina el primer Censo Penitenciario. Los resultados demostraron que las mujeres estaban condenadas, mayoritariamente, por infanticidio. Estos casos preocuparon particularmente al Estado argentino debido a la alta tasa de mortalidad infantil y la necesidad de repoblar el territorio. El propósito de este trabajo será analizar a las infanticidas en relación a las características sociales, económicas y demográficas de las mujeres de la provincia de Buenos Aires, en general, y al resto de las mujeres presas, en particular. Nos interesa, puntualmente, indagar quiénes eran, las características compartidas y los motivos que las movilizaron a deshacerse de los recién nacidos |
| English abstract | In Argentina, thefirstPenitentiaryCensuswascarried outin 1906. Theresultsrevealedthatmost of the female inmates had been condemned for infanticide. This fact was of great concern to the State because ofhigh child mortality rates and the need to re-populate the territory. Our aim is to analyze these women in relation to the social, economic and demographic characteristics of women from the Province of Buenos Aires in general and to the rest of the femaleinmates, in particular.
