| Spanish abstract | Este artículo aborda el análisis del papel que jugaron los eclesiásticos en su búsqueda de mercedes del rey como recompensa de sus servicios, expuestos en las probanzas que realizaron. La esperanza de eventualmente recibir la merced alentó la realización de actividades necesarias para el buen funcionamiento de la Iglesia secular. Las mercedes que pretendían se centraron en la concesión de alguna prebenda u oficio y en la administración de un curato, especialmente de indios. En el caso del obispado yucateco, la búsqueda de estas mercedes adquirió mayor relevancia por el modelo señorial y rentista que privó en la colonización, sobre todo en la primera centuria del dominio hispano a la que corresponden las probanzas que en este artículo se presentan. Se plantean también las semejanzas y diferencias existentes entre las probanzas eclesiásticas y las que hicieron los seglares, así como la pretensión del clero criollo de ser preferido en las concesiones |
| English abstract | This article deals with the analysis of the role played by ecclesiastics with their search of royal rewards for services (mercedes), revealed by the probanzas they made recording these services. The hope of eventually receiving a royal reward encouraged their performance in the activities necessary to secure the functions of the secular Church. The grants they desired centered on the concession of a privilege or service, or the administration of a parish, especially that of an indian one. In the case of the Yucatecan bishopric, the search for these mercedes acquired greater relevance due to the economic model based on nobility that prevailed in colonial times, especially during the first century of the Span- ish rule, at a time when the probanzas presented in this paper where made. This article also pays attention to the similarities and differences between the ecclesiastical inquiries and those made by the laity, as well as the quest of the creole clergy to receive preferential treatment in the concessions |
