| Spanish abstract | La historiografía sobre el bandolerismo social en América Latina ha sido amplia y contundente en afirmar la relación profunda entre bandolerismo y las dinámicas políticas, aún en casos en que los bandoleros no estaban integrados a una facción. Este artículo tiene como objetivo mostrar las complejidades de esta relación a través del análisis de dos casos relacionados entre sí: la trayectoria del comiteco Andrés Monreal en Centroamérica durante la década de 1830, y la incursión desde la frontera guatemalteca de Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez en 1838. Los dos casos permiten visibilizar las ambigüedades de las poblaciones divididas por la línea fronteriza y el peso de los bandidos en las luchas políticas de la primera mitad del siglo XIX |
| English abstract | The historiography on social banditry in Latin America has been broad and forceful in affirming the deep relationship between banditry and political dynamics, even in cases where bandits were not part of a particular faction. This article aims to show the complexities of this relationship through the analysis of two related cases: the trajectory of Andres Monreal in Central America during the 1830s and the incursion from the Guatemalan border of Joaquín Miguel Gutierrez in 1838. The two cases reveal the ambiguities of the populations divided by the border as well as the influence of the bandits in the political struggles of the first half of the nineteenth century |
