| English abstract | What appears to be a contradiction in the historical design of the Western university is presented initially. Next, we analyze the historical intensification of the difficulties associated with the execution of this project in the light of the growing appreciation of democracy as a cultural value, not just a political one. Finally it is concluded by the apparent impossibility of the university to adapt to a fully democratic cultural environment in function of the way it was originally structured and due to the mutations that seem to have made its figure unnecessary. Obviously, it is not a question of pointing out the limitations of democratic moral dispositions, but rather of evaluating the possibility of them to bear fruit in the university environment due to the structural limitations it has |
| Portuguese abstract | Apresenta-se inicialmente o que parece ser uma contradição existente no projeto histórico da universidade ocidental. Em seguida analisa-se a intensificação histórica das dificuldades ligadas à execução desse projeto em função da crescente valorização da democracia como um valor cultural e não apenas político. Finalmente conclui-se pela aparente impossibilidade da universidade adaptar-se a um ambiente cultural plenamente democrático em função da maneira como ela foi originalmente estruturada e em função das mutações que parecem ter tornado sua figura desnecessária. Não se trata, obviamente de apontar as limitações das disposições morais democráticas e sim de avaliar a possibilidade delas frutificarem no ambiente universitário em função das limitações estruturais que ele possui |
