| Spanish abstract | El envejecimiento de la población pone en duda la sustentabilidad financiera en el largo plazo de los sistemas de pensiones. Esto, que ocurre en casi todos los países desarrollados, también sucede en algunos de América Latina, entre ellos Cuba. Desde 1959, Cuba construyó un sistema que tiene las edades de retiro más bajas de la región y los periodos de retiro más largos, con ingresos claramente insuficientes. Las pensiones, en valores reales, disminuyeron 68% desde 1989 y ya no son adecuadas para satisfacer las necesidades básicas. El artículo argumenta que es necesario reformar el sistema para aumentar los ingresos, extender la cobertura y asegurar su sustentabilidad en el futuro |
| English abstract | The aging of the population in the long run poses the question of the financial viability of the pension systems. This phenomenon, which is occurring in nearly all the developed countries, also affects some in Latin America, amongst them Cuba. Since 1959, Cuba has built a system with the lowest retirement age in the region and the most prolonged periods of retirement, despite an evidently insufficient income. The pensions, in terms of their real buying power, have fallen 68% since 1989 and are now insufficient to cover basic necessities. This article argues that the system needs to be reformed in order to increase income, broaden coverage and guarantee its viability in the future |
