| English abstract | This article aims at the work History of the War of Paraguay, by José Bernardino Bormann, a military man, born in the city of Porto Alegre in the Province of Rio Grande do Sul in 1844, and who participated in this central conflict in the history of Brazil during the century, act-ing, for example, in the battles of the siege of Uruguaiana, and the attack on Curupaiti. Our intent here is to identify the characteristics of the author’s writing, with an emphasis on the nationalist character of his historiography, as well as a writing of history that, in his time, was seen by many historians as an instrument to ex-alt the achievements of Brazil and to constitute its history |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo tem por objeto a obra História da Guerra do Paraguay, de José Bernardino Bor-mann, militar que nasceu na cidade de Porto Alegre, na Província do Rio Grande do Sul, em 1844, e que participou deste conflito central da história do Brasil durante o século XIX, atu-ando, por exemplo, nas batalhas do cerco de Uruguaiana e Curupaiti. Nosso intento aqui é identificar as características da escrita da histó-ria produzida pelo autor, com ênfase no caráter nacionalista de sua historiografia, bem ao gos-to de uma narrativa historiográfica que, em seu tempo, era vista por muitos historiadores como um instrumento para exaltar os feitos do Brasil e constituir a sua história nacional |
