| English abstract | In november, 9th, 1918 the british suffered their last loss during the Great War, the sinking of the battleship Britannia by enemy torpedoes, dying about 50 seamen. According to the brazilian naval historiography this huge ship would be waiting for the arrival of the Brazilian Naval Division, called DNOG, in front of Gibraltar to guide the entrance of this division into the harbor. It is going to be discussed at first in this article the circunstances of that sinking in three different perspectives, from the british battleship, from the german submarine UB-50 and the DNOG points of view. In a second part it is intended to discuss whether the mission accorded to Britannia, to escort DNOG into the harbor was really effective and how it was reinterpreted by the brazilian naval historians after the end of the Great War |
| Portuguese abstract | Em nove de novembro de 1918 os britânicos sofreram a sua última grande perda da guerra, o afundamento do Encouraçado Britannia por torpedeamento, morrendo na ocasião cerca de 50 militares. Segundo a historiografia naval brasileira, esse grande navio estaria aguardando a chegada da Divisão Naval Brasileira, a chamada DNOG, em frente a Gibraltar para orientar a entrada dessa divisão nesse porto. O que se pretende discutir neste artigo inicialmente são as contingências desse afundamento sob o ponto de vista de três atores principais nesse trágico evento, o do próprio encouraçado britânico, o do Submarino alemão UB-50 que o torpedeou e da DNOG que se dirigia para Gibraltar. Em uma segunda parte, pretende-se discutir se era essa a missão designada para o Britannia, escoltar a DNOG para a entrada em Gibraltar e como essa missão foi reinterpretada pelos historiadores navais brasileiros após o término da guerra |
