| English abstract | The Humaitá Fortress was the most important military engineering work of the Republic of Paraguay in the López Period (1841-1870). Although since the time of Doctor Jose Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, in the period of Independence (1811-1840), there had already been a river guard, such a guard was modest and its construction materialized only after the serious diplomatic conflict with the Empire which led to the expedition of Admiral Pedro Ferreira de Oliveira (1854-1855) and another international impasse, in this case with the United States, after the incident with the Water Witch. During the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), the Humaitá Fortress in the Paraguayan Quadrangle was the vital center of the Paraguayan defense and around which most of the war broke out during the Humaitá Campaign (1866- 1868) |
| Portuguese abstract | A Fortaleza de Humaitá foi a obra mais importante de engenharia militar da República do Paraguai realizada na Época dos López (1841- 1870). Ainda que desde os tempos do Doutor José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, na Época da Independência (1811-1840), já existisse ali uma guarda fluvial, tal guarda era modesta e a sua construção materializou-se só depois do grave conflito diplomático com o Império brasileiro, que derivou na expedição do Almirante Pedro Ferreira de Oliveira (1854-1855) e outro impasse internacional, neste caso com os Estados Unidos, após o incidente com o navio Water Witch. Durante a Guerra da Tríplice Aliança (1864-1870), a Fortaleza de Humaitá, no Cuadrilátero paraguaio, foi o centro vital da defesa paraguaia e em torno da qual se desenvolveu a maior parte do conflito bélico, durante a Campanha de Humaitá (1866-1868).
