| Spanish abstract | La presencia de más de trescientas especies de aves que habitan en la ciudad de Caracas, podría ser aprovechada con fines de ecoturismo urbano o turismo ecológico. Sin embargo, se hace necesario conocer si existen las condiciones para promover esta actividad. Por ello, surgió el interés por investigar la información que manejan los pobladores de esta urbe, quienes no sólo serían usuarios de este recurso con fines recreativos, sino también posibles promotores de la actividad entre visitantes de fuera de la ciudad.A este fin se exploró, con entrevistas semiestructuradas a 16 habitantes de Caracas, sobre los conocimientos de la avifauna y su posible uso para el ecoturismo. Los resultados arrojan algunos datos alentadores ya que, si bien se evidencia la escasa información que maneja la población respecto al tema, también se muestra una tendencia de interés hacia esta actividad. Considerando la necesidad de información, se sugiere promover el ecoturismo urbano, a través de la educación informal y de campañas publicitarias. | English abstract | The presence of over three hundred bird species living in the city of Caracas could be exploited for urban ecotourism or ecological tourism. Nevertheless, it is necessary to find out whether conditions exist for promoting such an activity. In this light, interest emerged in researching the information residents of this city have, since they would not only use this resource for recreational purposes but would also promote the activity among out-of-town visitors. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were applied to sixteen inhabitants of Caracas to explore their avifauna knowledge and its possible use for ecotourism.Results offer some encouraging data because, although they show that the population has only scant information on the subject, they also show a trend toward interest in this activity. Considering the need for information, it is suggested that urban ecotourism be promoted through informal education and advertising campaigns. Also, the need to learn more about the subject should be created in order to take advantage of such a beneficial activity |
