English abstract | One of the first subcellular structures described in bacteria were the polyphosphate granules, which are characterized by their high content of phosphorus in the form of polyphosphate. Recent work has shown that polyphosphate granules have a limiting membrane and possess an enzymatic mechanism for their acidification. Their electron density, enrichment in pyrophosphate, polyphosphate, and cations such as calcium, magnesium, and others, are characteristics in common with those of the organelles described as acidocalcisomes in a number of eukaryotic cells, from parasitic protists, to human platelets, indicating that acidocalcisomes evolved before the bacterial and eukaryotic lineages diverged. Acidocalcisomes have been linked with several functions, including storage of cations and phosphorus, polyphosphate metabolism, calcium homeostasis, maintenance of intracellular pH homeostasis, and osmoregulation |
