English abstract | An account is given of the evolution and characteristics of the settlement of Magallanes during the 20th century, a phenomenon that has been subject to the geographic, social and economic circumstances, and that has resulted both in a notorious concentration of population in a few urban centers and in an under-populated rural sector. Information is also given of an unsuccessful attempt to reverse this traditional tendency by a policy of promoting the settlement of people. Questions are asked about the advantages of maintaining the current settlement system given a future of integral regional development |
