English abstract Until 1942, Manuel Sandoval Vallarta developed both, a career as a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and as an ally in the shaping of Mexican scientific institutions. However, that year he was confronted with a crucial decision, which implied on what side of the frontier he would work from then on. This episode has been scarcely explored and his decision (returning to Mexico) has been explained in terms of patriotic scientific commitments and pacifism. Here I revisit this turning point in the career of this distinguished Mexican scientist and highlight elements that contribute to a truly different understanding of it, by emphasizing his role as a mediator in the inter-American relations and the changing agency of his hybrid Mexican-US condition. This paper shows how historical episodes commonly accounted through the lens of nationalistic concerns can be endowed with greater historiographical relevance when the intellectual borders of the nation are crossed
