| English abstract | This paper seeks to present and discuss a central thesis of quinean ethical theory , as it appears in "On the Nature of Moral Values." This thesis is the claim that ethics displays an ineliminable "methodological infirmity" (caused by lack of a more direct contact with the "observational sentences") when compared with science. We seek to explain this thesis and, at the same time, defend it against the charge, supported by Flanagan, of inconsistency with the general philosophical naturalism of Quine |
| Portuguese abstract | O presente artigo procura apresentar e discutir uma tese central da teoria ética quineana, tal como aparece em “On the Nature of Moral Values”. Essa tese consiste na afirmação de que a ética exibe uma “debilidade metodológica” ineliminável (causada pela falta de um contato mais direto com as “sentenças observacionais”) relativamente à ciência. Procuramos explicitar essa tese e, ao mesmo tempo, defende-la contra a acusação, sustentada por Flanagan, de inconsistência com o naturalismo filosófico geral de Quine |
