| English abstract | The censorship of poetry in Book II of Plato's Republic is clearly based on a moral criterion: in the education of youth, should be avoided ugly myths, that is, the myths that lead to moral vices. There are passages in which Plato seems to identify the ugliness of the myths with the concept of lie and t hus the censorship seems to address to the liars myths. Elsewhere, however, Plato seems to admit the existence of myths, though liars, can be considered beautiful. In this case, Book II does not seem to identify the concepts of lie and ugliness in the myths. The oscillation between the real reason to censor the poets in Book II of the Republic constitute the opportunity of this investigation |
| Portuguese abstract | A censura platônica à poesia no Livro II da República está claramente fundada num critério moral: na educação dos jovens, devem ser evitados os mitos feios, isto é, os mitos que conduzem aos vícios morais. Há passagens em que Platão parece identificar a feiúra dos mitos ao conceito de menti ra e, assim, a censura parece se dirigir aos mitos mentirosos. Em outros trechos, contudo, P latão parece admitir a existência de mitos que, apesar de mentirosos, podem ser consider ados belos. Nesse caso, o Livro II não parece identificar os conceitos de mentira e fe iúra nos mitos. A oscilação entre o verdadeiro motivo para censurar os poetas no Livro II da República constitui o ensejo desta investigação |
