| Spanish abstract | En este trabajo, busco rastrear el sentido del concepto “misión” en las denominadas “misiones antropológicas” que se desarrollaron en el México decimonónico en dos momentos: durante la Intervención Francesa y el Porfiriato. En el primer periodo, voy a destacar el rol que tuvo el cura vicentino francés Emmanuel Domenech. Y en el segundo, a fines del siglo XIX, abordaré la misión que el jesuita belga Aquiles Gerste llevó a cabo en la Tarahumara por encargo de la Junta Colombina de México. El objetivo es establecer la estrecha relación entre las misiones y la colonización, enfatizar que hay una serie de prácticas que estos personajes conjugaron y que comparten la labor pastoral eclesiástica y las incursiones antropológicas: el desplazamiento, el viaje a territorios lejanos; el permanecer ahí durante un cierto tiempo, el intento de aprender la lengua y el llevar a cabo una labor de adoctrinamiento, por un lado, respecto al evangelio y, por el otro, abanderando la fe en el progreso y la ciencia |
| English abstract | In this work, I seek to trace the meaning of the concept of “mission” in the socalled “anthropological missions” that took place in nineteenth-century Mexico in two moments: during the French intervention and the Porfiriato. In the first period, I will highlight the role played by the French Vincentian priest Emmanuel Domenech. And in the second, at the end of the 19th century, I will approach the mission that the Belgian Jesuit Aquiles Gerste carried out in the Tarahumara at the request of the Junta Colombina de Mexico. The objective is to establish the close relationship between the missions and the colonization, to emphasize that there are a series of practices that both personages combined. There are some actions that ecclesiastical pastoral work and anthropological incursions share: the displacement, to travel to distant territories; to stay there for a while, the attempt to learn the native language and to accomplish an indoctrination work, on the one hand, with respect to the gospel and, on the other, flagging the faith in progress and science |
