| English abstract | The analysis of some of the German expressionist films produced in the early twentieth century enables us point to the existence of common and recurring themes such as the voluntary submission of individuals, the mass manipulation by leaders, the split personality, and the double. Although such issues seem to refer, at first, only to the characters’ psychological disorders, Sigfried Kracauer seeks to demonstrate the relationship between the topics covered in expressionist films and Germany’s social reality in the postwar period. In this perspective, the aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between aspects of the individual psychic reality, especially alienation, mental alienation, and estrangement produced by social reality. It puts together the strange (Das Unheimliche) discussed by Freud, the concept of estrangement (Entfremdung) by Marx, and the effect of estrangement in art (Verfremdungseffekt) by Bertolt Brecht, discussed by Herbert Marcuse |
| Portuguese abstract | A análise de alguns filmes do cinema expressionista alemão produzidos no início do século XX possibilita apontar a existência de temas comuns e recorrentes como a submissão voluntária dos indivíduos, a manipulação da massa pelo líder, o tema da personalidade cindida e o duplo. Ainda que essas temáticas pareçam referir-se, à primeira vista, somente aos transtornos psicológicos dos personagens, Sigfried Kracauer procura demonstrar a relação existente entre os temas tratados nos filmes expressionistas e a realidade social da Alemanha no pós-guerra. Nesta perspectiva, este trabalho tem como proposta discutir a relação entre aspectos da realidade psíquica individual, sobretudo a alienação mental e a alienação e o estranhamento produzidos pela realidade social. Põe em contato o estranho (Das Unheimliche) discutido por Freud, o conceito de estranhamento (Entfremdung) de Marx e o efeito de estranhamento na arte (Verfremdungseffekt) de Bertolt Brecht, discutido por Herbert Marcuse |
