| English abstract | In this article, I make some comments on the bed occupancy rates in intensive care units in the case of Porto Alegre, Brazil, at the first six months of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. I argue how the production and the uses of these rates, by the City Hall, gains technical airs, but leaves aside a series of complexities. Following the bed occupancy data and the measures adopted by the city hall, I argue how political choices and decisions are based on criteria that are not exclusively technical. I rely on discussions about quantification of society and the politics of numbers in a dialogue with the Achille Mbembe’s notion of “necropolitics”. I try to think the rate as a necropolitic’s dispositive that, while legitimizing the loosening of quarantine, it exposes vulnerable populations to risks |
| Portuguese abstract | Neste artigo, traço alguns comentários sobre a taxa de ocupação de leitos de UTI a partir do caso de Porto Alegre, Brasil, nos primeiros seis meses de pandemia de Sars-CoV-2. Argumento como a produção e o uso dessas taxas, por parte da Prefeitura Municipal, ganha ares técnicos que deixam de lado uma série de complexidades. Acompanhando os dados de ocupação dos leitos e as medidas adotadas pela prefeitura da cidade, argumento como as escolhas e decisões políticas no combate à pandemia são baseadas em outros critérios que não exclusivamente técnicos. Apoio-me em discussões sobre quantificação da sociedade e política dos números em diálogo com a noção de “necropolítica” de Achille Mbembe. Tento pensar a taxa como um dispositivo da necropolítica que, ao legitimar a flexibilização da quarentena, expõe populações vulneráveis aos riscos |
