| English abstract | This article attempts to explain the concept of theo-politics in an analysis of the colonial regime established in the conquest of America. Studying the construction of patronage in the Iberian Peninsula, it seeks to identify how belief, power, ecclesiastical doctrine and civil law are articulated, both in Europe and in the New World. It then proceeds to study the regalism developed by scholars linked to the State. It demonstrates that the ideas of theologians who reflected upon the relation between Church and State in the 18th century were not so distinct from those established by the laity. This relation between power and belief pervades human history, but we believe that the concept of sovereignty characteristic of modernity overlaps specifically the divine and secular realms. The focus on those historical variations within theo-political economy contributes to our concept of State secularization in 19th century Latin America, as well as the legacy left by the painful construction of democracy throughout the continent |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo pretende fundamentar o conceito de teo-político na análise do regime colonial estabelecido na conquista da América. Estudando a construção do padroado na península Ibérica, buscamos identificar como a crença, o poder, a doutrina eclesiástica e o direito civil estão articulados, tanto na Europa quanto no Novo Mundo. Com esse roteiro básico, chegamos ao estudo do regalismo desenvolvido pelos pensadores ligados ao Estado. Demonstramos ainda que as ideias dos teólogos que pensaram a relação entre Igreja e Estado no século XVIII não eram tão distintas das elaboradas pelo laicato. Essa relação entre o poder e o crer percorre a história humana, mas cremos que conceito de soberania característico da Idade Moderna sobrepõe de modo específico os reinos divino e terrestre. Perceber essas variações dentro da economia teopolítica contribui para entender melhor a secularização do Estado no decorrer do século XIX latino-americano e a herança deixada na difícil construção da democracia através do continente |
