| Spanish abstract | El artículo hace una lectura de la muerte de Miguel Pro, sacerdote jesuita ejecutado en México en 1927 tras haber sido inculpado de participar en un intento de asesinato contra el presidente electo Álvaro Obregón. La lectura se hace mediante el análisis de diversas posturas sobre la muerte de Pro, para comprender la influencia de su figura. El texto explora algunos de los modos en que la corporeidad y la gestualidad asociadas al martirio moderno distinguen a éste del martirio de la Antigüedad clásica y han facilitado la construcción de discursos sociopolíticos vinculados a la muerte en contextos no religiosos |
| English abstract | This article analyzes the death of Father Miguel Pro, a jesuit priest executed in 1927 in Mexico City after being accused of participating in an assassination attempt against the elect president Alvaro Obregon. By using an array of stances on Pro’s death, the text aims at exploring some of the ways in which corporeality, gestures, and images are linked to modern martyrdom. It also explores how witnessing through technical means has transformed the very notion of martyrdom and shaped social and political discourses linking martirial death to non-religious contexts |
