| Spanish abstract | A través del análisis cualitativo de fuentes de archivo sobre los indígenas pijaos y su lengua, así como de informaciones que sirven para contextualizar ese material, este artículo apunta a reconsiderar el rol del grupo en la conformación de la sociedad colonial y a trascender el carácter bélico que suele atribuírsele en documentos e historiografía. El estudio plantea que el análisis de palabras asociadas con el grupo, y del uso que otros indígenas y españoles les dieron, sugiere que su lengua fue empleada frecuentemente por sociedades asentadas en las gobernaciones de Popayán y Neiva durante la Colonia temprana, lo cual implica que los pijaos desempeñaron un importante papel político en el contexto de la guerra |
| English abstract | Through the qualitative analysis of archival sources on the Pijao Indians and their language, and information that allows to contextualize those materials, this article aims to reconsider the group's role in the configuration of the Colonial society and to transcend the warlike character often attributed to them in archival documents and historiography. The study proposes that analyzing words related to the group, and how other Native communities as well as Spaniards used them, suggests that their language was frequently employed by societies living in the governorships of Popayán and Neiva in the early colonial period, which implies the Pijao assumed an important political role in the warfare context |
