| English abstract | Two recent debates have questioned the adequacy of the neodarwinian explanatory framework as regards the diversity of living beings. The first one began with the contingency thesis put forth by Stephen Jay Gould. That thesis can be briefly described as emphasizing the open-endedness and instability inherent in the evolutionary process. The second one is centered on the self-organization thesis defended by Stuart Kauffman. According to Kauffman, the property of self-organization imposes restrictions over the “paramount power” of natural selection. Here, we ask whether those two theses are compatible, if not with neo-Darwinism itself, at least with the received view of evolution presented by Kim Sterelny and Paul Griffiths |
| Portuguese abstract | Dois recentes debates têm questionado a adequação do arcabouço explicativo do neodarwinismo diante da diversidade dos organismos. O primeiro deles tem início na “tese das contingências” de Stephen Jay Gould, que pode ser brevemente descrita como a ênfase no caráter instável e aberto a contingências apresentado pelo processo evolutivo. O segundo está centrado na “tese da auto-organização” que, conforme defendida por Stuart Kauffman, se traduz nas restrições que a propriedade de auto-organização, supostamente inerente à vida, exerce sobre a seleção natural. Neste trabalho, nos perguntamos se estas duas teses são compatíveis, se não com o neo-darwinismo em si, pelo menos com a “visão aceita da evolução”, uma versão mitigada de neodarwinismo apresentada por Sterelny e Griffiths |
