| English abstract | Darwinism led to a reversal in the hierarchy of the teleological notions: with Darwinism the environmental adaptation of the living being begun to be considered as the raison de être of that intra-organic teleology which was always in the center of those predominantly physiological worries of the Natural History that was made before 1859. But, this reversal had consequences that went beyond the conceptual level. The critical role that the Darwinian perspective gives to the relations that the living being keep with its environment, made that the observation of the conditions in which the organisms carry out their existences took a relevancy earlier unknown; and that led to a substantial alteration of the role granted to the naturalists that were working out of the limits of the museums |
| Portuguese abstract | O darwinismo propiciou uma inversão na hierarquia das noções teleológicas: com ele a adaptação ambiental do vivente se erigiu na razão de ser dessa teleologia intra-orgânica que sempre ficou no centro das preocupações predominantemente fisiológicas da história natural anterior a 1859. Mas, esta inversão teve conseqüências que foram para alem do plano conceptual. O destaque que a perspectiva darwiniana dá às relações que os seres vivos guardam com o seu entorno, faz que a observação das condições nas que eles desenvolvem suas existências passe a ter uma importância antes desconhecida; e isto levou a uma alteração substancial no papel concedido aos naturalistas que trabalhavam fora dos limites dos museus |
