| English abstract | Starting with the positions taken by the character Elizabeth Costello, in the book “The lives of animals” written by John Coetzee, this article intend to address the Darwinian theory of common origin between human and animal minds and their implications in the field of zooethics (“animal ethics”). The article discusses notions presented by Costello and counterpoints from other authors, including concepts such as “sympathetic imagination”, “subjective character of experience”, “ethical blindness by conditioning”. The contrast between reason and emotion as points of reference for an ethical debate will be addressed. The importance of emotions will be discussed both with regard to the notion of “animal emotions” as to the place of human “moral emotions” in the establishment of values and parameters. Emphasis will be on the faculty of “sympathy”, including the human capacity to put oneself in another’s place. Here, the animal turns out to be another sensitive, able to enjoy the world by its own way, rich and full, and, at the same time, to establish intersubjective interactions – personal and “intimate” – with humans |
| Portuguese abstract | Tomando como fio condutor as posições defendidas pela personagem Elizabeth Costello, na obra “A vida dos animais”, de John Coetzee, este artigo pretende abordar a tese darwiniana da origem comum entre as mentes animal e humana e suas implicações no campo da zooética (“ética animal”). Serão discutidas noções apresentadas por Costello e contrapontos de outros autores, incluindo conceitos como: “imaginação simpatizante”; “caráter subjetivo da experiência”; “cegueira ética por condicionamento”. O contraste entre razão e emoção como pontos de referência para um debate ético será abordado. A importância das emoções será discutida tanto no que diz respeito à noção de “emoções animais”, como também do lugar das “emoções morais” humanas no estabelecimento de valores e parâmetros. Será dada ênfase à faculdade da simpatia (“sympathy”), incluindo a capacidade humana de colocar- se no lugar do outro. Aqui, o animal se revela como um outro sensível, digno e capaz de usufruir o mundo de maneira própria, rica e plena, e, ao mesmo tempo, de capaz de realizar trocas intersubjetivas – pessoais e “íntimas” – com os humanos |
